US Pacific Command detected and tracked what it assessed to be a North Korean ballistic missile launch at 11.21am Hawaii time on Saturday (Sunday NZT), said US Navy Commander Dave Benham, a spokesman for US Pacific Command.

China -the North's sole major ally - has urged the U.S. president to take a peaceful approach to resolving the North Korean tensions. Kim has warned the U.S. of launching a pre-emptive nuclear strike, if the U.S. nuclear forces mobilise against it. China is North Korea's only major ally.
China has spoken out against North Korea's missile and nuclear tests and has supported United Nations sanctions.
