MN health officials want $5 million to fight infectious diseases

Already this year, state and local officials have spent almost $3 million responding to measles, tuberculosis and syphilis, Ehlinger said in a prepared statement.

This measles outbreak was stretching the funds of the Minnesota Department of Health and it needed $5 million to combat infectious diseases.

Gov. Mark Dayton, he added, has pledged to advocate for the contingency fund's inclusion in any agreement on the state's upcoming two-year budget. There have also been no confirmed cases of measles in Wisconsin yet either.

Wednesday the Department of Health asked Minnesota lawmakers for $5 million in emergency funds to deal with the outbreak. These cases are primarily in the Hennepin County and impact kids of the Minnesota-Somali community.

Measles cases in Minnesota are continuing to rise, especially in the Somali community. While it is the duty of the Minnesota Health Department to respond to the threats swiftly, it can not continuously divert resources and funds from other important health services and channel its focus on "disease outbreaks and threats".

Dr. Mahab Ururshe, a pediatrician at Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital in St. Louis Park, Minnesota, is originally from Somalia and says he still sees many parents afraid of vaccines, even though numerous studies have shown no link between autism and vaccines.

Eight of those 168 cases diagnosed were multi-drug resistant (MDR) TB, an extremely unsafe and expensive to treat form of the disease.

"The refugee community in Minnesota, and particularly the Somali refugee community, has been at the center of several recent public health issues in the state", as Breitbart News reported.

"Not only are there health costs for treating children".

"Twenty-nine percent of the 593 foreign-born cases of active TB diagnosed in Minnesota, or 161, were attributed to Somali born migrants". If vaccines truly do afford long-term protection against infectious disease via memory T-cells that provoke antibodies, how could the unvaccinated pose a health threat to the vaccinated?

By 2000, endemic measles was declared "eliminated" from the United States. Less than half of the 2,505 arriving refugees who were medically screened were screened for syphlis, while 2,377 were screened for TB infection.

Minneapolis St-Paul has the largest Somali community in the United States, estimated to about 70,000 in total.

In Sioux Falls the Public Health department says they've never experienced any kind of resistance or reluctance to get vaccinated.
