US hepatitis C cases soar on spike in heroin use

"This is primarily a result of increasing injection drug use associated with America's growing opioid epidemic", the CDC added. In recent years, new hepatitis C drugs hit the market that can cure the infection in only a few months.

Of the 3.5 million Americans living with hepatitis, most were born between 1945 and 1965 and were infected decades ago, according to the CDC.

States that have struggled most with the unfolding opioid crisis also tended to have worst rates of new Hepatitis C infections.

But officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention think the reported infections are only a fraction of the actual number.

"Stopping hepatitis C will eliminate an enormous disease and economic burden for all Americans", said John Ward, M.D., director of CDC's Division of Viral Hepatitis.

"We found that some counties - particularly rural counties in Tennessee - where eight percent of infants were exposed to hepatitis C", said Patrick. Most people don't get sick for many years, so they aren't tested and don't know they are infected.

Even with the new surveillance efforts, hepatitis C detection can be hard, particularly among younger patients who may be using drugs and are less likely get regular medical care.

The hepatitis C virus spreads through the blood but does most of its damage by infecting the liver. Hepatitis C treatment not only cures the vast majority of people living with the virus, but also prevents transmission to their partners and children.

Many experts say soaring drug costs are making some treatments for cancer, hepatitis C and other illnesses out of reach for some of the nation's most vulnerable people.

Among the best ways of preventing spread of the virus are public health laws that allow access to clean syringes for drug users, such as needle exchange programs, decriminalization of the possession of syringes, and allowing the retail sale of syringes without a prescription. One study indicates that 80 percent of young people with hepatitis C live more than 10 miles from an SSP.

While grim news from a public health standpoint, the rising number of infections is an opportunity for drugmakers including Gilead Sciences Inc. Another study published in today's issue of CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report (MMWR), examines the range of state laws that can influence access to both SSPs and curative treatment for hepatitis C. The study finds that only three states have laws that support full access to both comprehensive SSPs and hepatitis C-related treatment and preventive services for people who inject drugs.

"Taken together, this suggests that efforts targeted at preventing and expanding treatment for opioid use disorder may help mitigate some of the increases we see", Patrick said.

There's the potential to eradicate the virus from the US using a combination of infection prevention, increasing access to the new pills and making sure the drugs are taken correctly, according to the CDC's Ward. "Now we need a substantial, focused and concerted national effort" to make the tools and treatments available to all Americans, he said.
