Large Cyber Attack Hits England's NHS Hospital System; Ransoms Demanded

As the malware that affected the National Health Service (NHS) England hospitals continues to spread across various parts of the world, Kaspersky Lab, a cybersecurity company based in Moscow, has published a blog post in which it estimates that 45,000 attacks have been carried out in 74 countries, mostly in Russian Federation.

No group has been identified as responsible for the attack so far. In a statement, NHS says that the attack wasn't targeted directly at its own agency, but that it "is affecting organisations from across a range of sectors.".

The NHS may not have been the primary target; it is unclear whether patient data were accessed.

The attack hit Britain's health service, forcing affected hospitals to close wards and emergency rooms. "Our focus is on supporting organisations to manage the incident swiftly and decisively".

The U.K.'s National Health Service has confirmed that up to 25 NHS organizations have been compromised by the ransomware, which is holding important files hostage and demanding that authorities pay the attackers the equivalent of $300 in bitcoin in order to regain access to their systems.

The attacks involved ransomware - software which invades computer systems and takes control of files. They said the system was down and that they can not transfer anyone till the computer system was back up so he is still in the theatre.

It's not believed at this time that the attack will result in leaked patient data, but investigations are ongoing.

More than a dozen hospitals in England were targeted by ransomware Friday amid an apparent large-scale cyberattack that may have ensnared companies worldwide, including FedEx and Spain's largest telecom company.

A NUMBER of GP surgeries in St Helens are believed to have been affected by a cyber attack on NHS systems.

It said its hospitals had shut down all computer systems as a protective measure and canceled all non-urgent activity.

Barts Health NHS Trust in London said on its website it was "experiencing a major IT disruption and there are delays at all of our hospitals".

The PM added: "The National Cyber Security Centre is working closely with NHS digital to ensure that they support the organisations concerned and that they protect patient safety".

British government officials and intelligence chiefs have repeatedly highlighted the threat to critical infrastructure and the economy from cyberattacks.

"Our emergency surgeries are running doors open, we can access our software but ransomware window pops up every 20-30 seconds so we are slow", writes @fendifille in a post about the attack.

Krishna Chinthapalli, a doctor at Britain's National Hospital for Neurology & Neurosurgery who wrote a paper on cybersecurity for the British Medical Journal, warned that British hospitals' old operating systems and confidential patient information made them an ideal target for blackmailers.

At St. Bartholomew's Hospital in central London, Sean, who did not want to give his last name, said he noticed problems with the network as soon as he arrived.
