Trump to make decision on Paris climate pact after G7 summit

Patricia Espinosa, head of the U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change that is hosting the Bonn talks, said it was important to make progress on the nuts and bolts of the agreement before November's annual climate summit.

After months of uncertainty, Trump appears to be edging toward a decision on whether to honor the 2015 deal to limit global warming.

Media reports have said the White House could hold a special meeting within days to discuss the future of the agreement clinched in 2015 after years of tough bartering. The White House had previously said a decision would be reached before Trump's appearance at the summit.

Salaheddine Mezouar of Morocco, who presided over the last high-level climate negotiations in 2016, said he trusted that "the good sense and pragmatic spirit President Trump and his team" would prevail.

"Because of current debate in Washington, it could be that policies move more slowly but I am confident that the United States will continue to move in the right direction", he said. Halstead co-authored an opinion piece that ran in the New York Times Tuesday, titled "The Business Case for the Paris Climate Accord".

Despite President Donald Trump's threat to pull America from the Paris Agreement, about 3,000 climate negotiators met in the city of Bonn, Germany on Tuesday, to discuss the nitty gritty of the worldwide deal that was negotiated late previous year.

Some advisers - including chief strategist Steve Bannon and Environmental Protection Agency administrator Scott Pruitt - have urged Trump to uphold his campaign pledge to scrap the agreement.

That team is composed of clashing parties with very different views, including Environmental Protection Agency Administrator Scott Pruitt, who wants the United States to ditch the Paris agreement, and Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who says the nation should remain a party and continue to negotiate with global partners about how it will address climate change.

A meeting for top advisers to discuss the deal was set for Tuesday afternoon but was postponed. Lisa Murkowski were just some of the discussions she is holding over the next two weeks as part of her White House "listening tour". It therefore does not have the force of a binding treaty, and the United States could potentially withdraw from the deal without legal penalty. However, leaving the agreement altogether, and abandoning more than 190 countries, could potentially leave the United States isolated.

However, a coalition of 38 conservative and free market groups yesterday reportedly wrote their own letter to Trump urging him to ditch the Paris Agreement, arguing it would "protect" USA energy firms and manufacturers. "The climate crisis demands urgent action and the United States needs to lead on implementing this historic agreement and tackling this global challenge".
