The shooting took place shortly before 4 p.m. on the 1300 block of 15th Avenue North.

A 14-year-old boy is dead and police in Princeton are investigating after being called to a residence about shots fired.

Officers found the teen deceased and a second 14-year-old boy at the scene, said Princeton Police Chief Todd Frederick.

The victim, Eric Nelson, was identified Tuesday, by his family and Princeton Schools Superintendent Julia Espe.

The police department is being assisted by the Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office and the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension in the investigation.

Eric's mother, Laurie Blegen-Nelson, says her son was a strong-willed kid with a big heart who loves his three siblings "more than life itself". She says students and staff are devastated.

Princeton is about an hour northwest of the Twin Cities.
