Manchester United have emerged as the front-runners in the race to sign the 24-year-old who left Old Trafford for £2m.

Mourinho seems to be intent on strengthening his back-line further, and making Keane a part of it could spark several changes in the United defence.

Keane's salary will rocket from £25,000 to £75,000 and won't have to move as he continued to live in Manchester following his move to Burnley.

Keane has had a standout campaign with Burnley, earning a national team call up thanks to his exploits at club level.

Another transfer similar to this one happened last season when Manchester United paid a world record sum of £89million last summer to sign their youth player Paul Pogba, four years after selling him to Juventus for £800,000.

The Daily Mail claims that Keane is desperate to return to his boyhood club and is set to sign a contract worth around £100,000-a-week as long as he's given assurances he'll play at least 30 games per season. Spurs are also interested in Harry Maguire and Ben Gibson as back-ups for their first-choice defenders according to various reports, so a move for one of them may well be a better option than entering a bidding war with United for Keane.

Despite Smalling's assertion that he has a "very good relationship" with Mourinho, it is understood that the United manager has been unhappy...
