An insatiable Cristiano Ronaldo fired Real Madrid to a 4-1 win over Celta Vigo yesterday to take Zinedine Zidane's side three points clear at the top of La Liga and within touching distance of winning a first league title in five years.

The La Liga season is drawing towards a tantalising finale as Real Madrid and Barcelona's respective title challenges go to the final day.

The Portuguese superstar opened the scoring after 10 minutes with his 367th league goal to take him past former England global Jimmy Greaves.

Karim Benzema and Toni Kroos ultimately finished Celta off following Aspas' dismissal, but it was Ronaldo who set them on their way, scoring twice to effectively put Madrid on the brink of their first title since 2012.

He said: "He's feeling great and he's shown it again here".

Ronaldo (who soon added his 368th goal shortly thereafter) also managed to beat the venerable record in 68 fewer games, taking just 460 outings as opposed to Greaves' 528. "After that we will have 13 days to prepare well to try to win the Champions League final".

But he was denied a hat-trick late on when he inexplicably missed a virtually open goal, with his team-mates utterly stunned that he had failed to convert one of the easiest chances of his entire career.

Madrid have claimed two Champions League crowns since Isco joined, but they have failed to win La Liga in that time, so none of those extras have yet been paid out.

Real Madrid's Cristiano Ronaldo celebrates scoring their second goal with Isco. "I expect Celta to play like normal". But with Real having this game-in-hand, they still very much hold the initiative. Then we had 20 minutes when it was back and forth and although we counter-attack very well that type of game does not really suit us.

The Bernabeu club can secure a league and European double themselves but Ronaldo isn't thinking of that just yet.
