Nicola Sturgeon responds to the death of Ian Brady

Reviled child killer Ian Brady finally dead

Brady, along with his partner Myra Hindley, sexually assaulted and killed five children in their home near Manchester and on Saddleworth Moor, where they buried the children.

Moors murderer Ian Brady has died in hospital aged 79, an NHS spokesman has said.

He and girlfriend Myra Hindley buried their victims' bodies on Saddleworth Moor, near Manchester in northwestern England.

Opening an inquest into the death, senior coroner Christopher Sumner said he also wants assurances that a funeral director and crematorium willing to take Brady's body have been found.

He said: 'I had written to him several times asking for meetings so we could look at photographs, maps and plans of the area to help him to identify the spot where Keith was buried but he has never responded to me.

The body of the third victim, 12-year-old Keith, was never found.

"I don't think anybody will mourn Ian Brady", Ms Sturgeon told i.

Glasgow-born Brady had been held at Ashworth High Secure Hospital since 1985 and died at 6.03pm.

The coroner's comments suggest there are fears Brady's ashes may be scattered on Saddleworth Moor in a sickening final insult to his victims and their tormented families.

The Police officer who led a fresh search for Keith's body on Saddleworth Moor said he believed Brady had known exactly where the burial site was.

Brady was jailed for the killings of John Kilbride, 12, 10-year-old Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans, 17, in 1966.

The official cause of death was given as corpul monale (heart failure) and obstructive pulmonary disease.

Bennett's mother Winnie Johnson, who died in 2012, repeatedly pled for Brady to reveal the information.

Brady's lawyer, Robin Makin, was one of the last people to see the killer alive.

The Liverpool-based solicitor told the Press Association: "He was in the last hours of his life so he was pretty weak but we were able to discuss a few things and sort out what he wanted to be done".

"It just remains to be seen whether information is passed over to the police after his death from his representatives but we have no information to confirm that as of yet".

'It seems a bit unlikely but we are not giving up hope'.

Coroner's officer Alby Howard-Murphy said no relatives of Brady's were known to the court.

Such is the notoriety of the Moors murderers that after 50 years the death of killer Brady wiped news of Britain's general election off most of the national tabloid newspapers.

According to The Guardian, Brady revealed he had a lung and chest condition in December and had been receiving palliative care from cancer nurses at Ashworth psychiatric hospital on Merseyside.

In the 1980s, the couple admitted abducting and murdering 16-year-old Pauline Reade on her way to a Manchester disco in 1963 and killing Keith Bennett (12) in 1964.

The inquest was adjourned until June 29.
