World leaders on Monday largely hailed the thumping victory of Emmanuel Macron in France's presidential election, with the European Union nations breathing a sigh of relief and describing it a triumph for a strong and united Europe.

The centrist candidate, 39, defeated the far right's Marine Le Pen, winning 66.1 per cent of the vote to her 33.9 per cent.

French President-elect Emmanuel Macron won an offer of support from Socialist ex-Prime Minister Manuel Valls Tuesday as he and his aides worked on strategy ahead of parliamentary elections crucial to his reform plans.

The European Union, for its part, has been witnessing severe divisions and a major identity crisis, which was mainly incited by the exit of Britain.

"I wish him success in the face of great challenges", she said. "We'll wait and see", Bolivar said.

"China stands ready to work with France to move the strategic Sino-French partnership to a higher level", he said.

"We have been designated the leading opposition force in this second round, that shows a re-composition of political life", she said.

A few days before the second round of the election it also became known that half of the supporters of the former presidential candidate from The Republicans' party, Francois Fillon, and 40 percent of those who voted for Jean-Luc Melenchon intend to cast their ballot for Emmanuel Macron in the upcoming presidential run-off, a poll by Odoxa revealed.

President Kiska: Your victory is a happy day for all who believe in a united and strong Europe.

"He carries the hopes of millions of French people, and of many people in Germany and the whole of Europe", the German chancellor told a press conference.

President Kiska is looking forward to cooperating with Marcon and deepening what he described as "traditionally excellent and intense" relations between Slovakia and France. If France could be called united, it is more united against Le Pen than for Macron.

Monday was the first time Macron and Hollande had appeared in public together since Macron resigned in August 2016 as Hollande's economy minister to run for president - a decision that was received coldly by the French leader at the time.
