Microsoft: Ransomware attack should be a 'wake-up call' for governments

Around a fifth of NHS trusts were hit in the attack, forcing them to postpone operations and procedures over the weekend.

They were among many victims of an indiscriminate global attack that has struck hundreds of thousands of computers worldwide by exploiting known vulnerabilities in older Microsoft computer operating systems.

"In addition to protective real-time monitoring of national NHS IT services and systems, which were unaffected by this issue, we are supporting NHS organisations by undertaking cyber security testing and providing bespoke advice and action points".

Home Secretary Amber Rudd is to chair a meeting of the Government's emergency Cobra committee at the Cabinet Office on Whitehall on Monday to assess progress on dealing with the attack.

A feared second spike in the attack failed to materialize on Monday but the healthcare system was still disrupted.

"WannaCry" is a virus released by the hacker group Shadow Brokers, with some of its components believed to be from tools used by the US National Security Agency (NSA).

Darien Huss, a senior security research engineer at Proofpoint, warned that "a new attack" was a major concern following the first cyber assault.

NHS Shetland was one of only three Scottish health boards not affected by the "ransomware" attack.

NHS organisations across the country are on alert for a possible recurrence of Friday's cyberattack as staff return to work.

Brad Smith, Microsoft's president and chief legal officer, said yesterday in a blog post that his company, its customers and the government all share the blame, the report said.

Security Minister Ben Wallace has said that NHS trusts have enough funds to protect against cyber-attacks, and that the "real key" was in regularly backing up data and installing security patches.

Ms Sturgeon said she was not aware of any ransoms being paid over the cyber attack but said that will be part of the police investigation.

"This means that as a new working week begins it is likely, in the United Kingdom and elsewhere, that further cases of ransomware may come to light, possibly at a significant scale", officials said.
