Reported Homeland Security Appointee Has Denounced Marriage Equality, Black Lives Matter

Who is Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke

Controversial Wisconsin Sheriff David Clarke confirmed on Wednesday that he would be joining the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), prompting a chorus of outrage from those who say the cop who once compared Black Lives Matter to the KKK is unfit for the job. Clarke said he will be an assistant secretary at DHS' Office of Partnership and Engagement, which coordinates outreach to state, local and tribal officials and law enforcement.

The department did not confirm Clarke's appointment, but noted the position does not require Senate confirmation.

"I'm both honored and humbled to be appointed to this position", Clarke said during the interview.

State Sen. Lena Taylor, D-Milwaukee: "While Sheriff Clarke's departure is good news for Milwaukee County, it affirms the 45th president's lack of clear judgement and regard for the safety of our nation and its people". "He's probably not going to say much more until the official announcement, but he's excited". It had been rumored that Clarke was in the running for several appointments within the new administration.

CNN contributor Margaret Hoover, a former adviser to the department, said: "I actually worked in the Department of Homeland Security with people who took the job and the post incredibly seriously, and this ... man also argued for suspending habeas corpus on his radio show, he is representative of a kind of government that believes in reality TV and in entertaining and not the responsibility of governing". A grand jury recently recommended criminal charges against seven staffers in relation to Thomas's death.

Known for his criticisms of Black Lives Matter, Clarke suggested at a House Judiciary Committee meeting on policing that the root of the problems facing black communities is "black underclass subculture behavior", rather than issues related to police behavior. He's been one of Trump's biggest cheerleaders, frequently praising the president's every move on Twitter, where his brash social media presence has earned him over 600,000 followers. Many of our neighbors oppose the program as it allows law enforcement to stop and question people based on just their appearance. There is an election in 2018 for the full four-year sheriff's term. He further stated that "the law of the jungle replaced the rule of law..."

The group Voces de la Frontera which has been challenging Clarke for his tough stance against unauthorized immigrants also reacted to his planned departure as sheriff.

Now, Governor Scott Walker is tasked with appointing a new Milwaukee County sheriff.

"In January, Clarke threatened violence to fellow air passengers saying, 'next time he or anyone else pulls this stunt on a plane they may get knocked out.' That threat came after a passenger on a plane shook his head at him".
