Texas lands top prep recruit Mohamed Bamba

Texas basketball coach Shaka Smart landed the nation's No. 2 recruit Thursday when five-star forward Mohamed Bamba committed to the Longhorns.

The elite prospect made his plans known on The Players' Tribune on Thursday.

In his letter, the Harlem (New York) native said he bonded with Shaka Smart when he played under the Texas coach on Team USA (U18) last summer. Adding Bamba, gives Smart an immediate replacement for future first round NBA Draft pick Jarrett Allen. Bamba's presence will likely ignite Texas, while also showing other top recruits there are other schools out there besides Kentucky and Duke.

Bamba's arrival shifts the narrative at Texas, a program that underwent a turbulent 2015-16. He is ranked as the No. 2 player in the Class of 2017 by the 247Sports Composite.

I've chose to attend the University of Texas.

Bamba boosts a sparkling class that includes top-five point guard Matt Coleman of Oak Hill Academy (Va.), guard Jase Febres (Houston Westfield), and forwards Royce Hamm (Aldine Davis) and Jericho Sims (Minneapolis).

"I'm extremely excited that Mo has chosen Texas", Smart said in a statement.

"He's a very, very unique person who happens to also be a terrific basketball player".

The 2017-2018 college basketball season is still a ways away, but the landscape has been drastically altered by the commitments of some of the nation's top high school players over the past week. "Mo's combination of talent, intellect and ability to impact others will make him a catalyst in our program and on our campus from day one".

Bamba was selected to play in the McDonald's All-American and Jordan Brand All-American games.

"It's hard to rank the exact order of these, but I definitely took into consideration the overall school environment, the college town atmosphere, how easy it would be for my family to visit (five different airlines have a direct flight from NYC), my idol Kevin Durant's deep involvement with the Center for Sports Leadership & Innovation at the school, and my own gut feeling", Bamba wrote.

"When all was said and done, one school filled my decision jar the best", Bamba wrote.

Bamba hails from NY, where he's the No. 1 player in the state.
