Stadium for Rams, Chargers delayed; won't open until 2020

Officials placed the blame on the heavy rains that fell during a period when "mass excavation" was scheduled to occur, CBS2 reports.

"Our focus is always on the fan experience", Chargers president A.G. Spanos said in a statement.

So, the Chargers will play at the StubHub Center in Carson through the 2019 season. The extra year allows the Chargers to continue to grow the team's brand in Los Angeles while remaining closer in proximity to the current fan base in Orange County and San Diego.

The delay shouldn't disrupt the Los Angeles teams' current playing arrangements: The Rams plan to stay downtown in the Coliseum for the 2019 season, while the Chargers confirmed they will stay at the 30,000-seat StubHub Center in suburban Carson.

Excavation of the site, which formerly housed the Hollywood Park racetrack, started in November, but the teams said that weather delays in January, February and March have made it infeasible for the stadium to open for the 2019 National Football League season, as scheduled. That caused deep pools of water on the construction grounds, some as high as 15 feet, and stopped construction work for nearly 2 months, thus delaying the project.

The stadium has already been named the host of the 2021 Super Bowl, however, the selection may have to be reviewed by league owners in light of the construction delay. It will now open before the 2020 season. The district is envisioned to include a roughly 6,000-seat arena, more than 1.5 million square feet of retail and office space, 2,500 residential units and possibly a 300-room hotel, along with 25 acres of parks and open space.

Owner Stan Kroenke and the Rams broke ground at the Inglewood complex in November 2016.

Rain delays aren't just for football games, they're also for football stadiums. The Chargers exercised their opportunity to join the Rams in Los Angeles four months ago.
