Trump urges Liberty graduates to be outsiders

Its president, Jerry Falwell Jr., noted that Trump was only the second sitting president after George H.W. Bush to address the school's graduating class.

Falwell invited Trump to give this year's commencement address as early as December last year.

Trump did not comment directly on the week's news in his remarks in Lynchburg, Virginia, but his speech inveighed against the forces that he has long described as out to harm him in politics. Boy oh boy, you voted, you voted. The endorsement reportedly helped boost Trump's support from the evangelical community. In that speech, Trump promised to "protect Christianity". "We always set records", Trump said.

On Saturday, Donald Trump made his first commencement speech as president, and (surprisingly) was able to avoid igniting any new media wildfires in the process.

He urged the graduates to not pick the career their parents want them to have, to not give into "bitterness and anger", to hold fast to the things they believe to be true, to proudly be an "outsider" and to ignore the haters.

He occasionally sounded self-reflective as he imparted wisdom to the graduates.

Trump told Fox News's Jeanine Pirro in an interview excerpt released Friday that he did not demand the ousted Federal Bureau of Investigation chief's loyalty, but said he did not find such a request "inappropriate", adding, "I don't think it would be a bad question to ask". "You have to do what you love, or you most likely won't be very successful at it". "Embrace the label of outsider, because it's the outsiders who change the world and make a real and lasting difference".

For his first commencement speech as president, Donald Trump returned Saturday to an Evangelical Christian university where his bid for president elicited mixed reactions from students during the 2016 election. He added that he is proud to call Trump "my friend and my president".

The president said "the future belongs to the dreamers, not to the critics".

He steered clear of that subject, making only sidelong swipes at his critics.

"There is nothing easier or more pathetic than being a critic", Trump said.

He found few critics at Liberty University.

Trump's commencement speaking schedule is slightly less busy than that of first-year President Obama in 2009. Hale said she's solidly behind Trump.

"In my short time in Washington I've seen firsthand how the system is broken", he said.

Liberty University is having a moment in the spotlight, with Google Trends reporting more than 50,000 searches for Liberty University coming into their search engine on Saturday, May 13.

Lanora Hale came from Millville, N.J., to watch her son graduate with a master's degree. Trump said, drawing laughs from the crowd as he turned toward Falwell.

"I really think he's doing great. I said I was going to do it and Jerry, I did it", Trump said referring to Falwell and the Johnson Amendment order.

"When the pilgrims landed at Plymouth, they prayed", said Trump. The commander in chief typically addresses graduates of one of the US military service academies and Trump is scheduled to speak at the Coast Guard Academy in CT on Wednesday.
