UK's Theresa May Maintains Strong Lead in Weekend Opinion Polls

Sir Michael Fallon"We still have a General Election to win

"I am disappointed at every Labour defeat in the local elections", Corbyn said, adding, "It is a challenge on an historic scale".

Since the last election in 2013 there have been boundary changes in Hertfordshire which have increased the number of councillors from 77 to 78.

The United Kingdom Independence Party won one new seat, and lost all 114 they were defending.

But its overall vote share of 18 per cent was their best result in any election since entering a coalition with the Tories in 2010, and put them nine points behind Labour on 27 per cent.

In a major boost to British Prime Minister Theresa May, her Conservative Party today made huge gains in the local and mayoral polls which was being seen as a victory for her tough-talking Brexit stance and a vindication of her move to call a general election next month.

In Tees Valley, Conservative Ben Houchen won after a run-off against Labour's Sue Jeffrey and Conservative Tim Bowles was declared the victor in the West of England. We know this is no small task, it is a challenge on a historic scale.

Opinion polls suggest May has a runaway lead in the national election of around 20 percentage points, which could give her over a 100 more seats in parliament.

One of the most detrimental council losses for the party was Glasgow, Scotland's biggest city and once the staunchest of Labour strongholds.

Theresa May's Tories secured more than 550 council seats, significant victories in mayoralty contests in West Midlands and Tees Valley, and control of 11 extra councils. "We in the Labour party have to hear that message coming up from our people and we need to respond and we need to respond to it now", he said.

"And the reality is that only a General Election vote for the Conservatives in 34 days' time will strengthen my hand to get the best deal for Britain from Brexit".

The results sparked a furious reaction from the party's former donor Arron Banks, who said Ukip was "finished as an electoral force" under its current leadership and needed "a strategic bullet to the back of the head".

The Conservative candidate for the new "metro mayor" post for the West of England, Tim Bowles, beat Labours Lesley Mansell by 51.6 per cent to 48.4 per cent, registering another major win for the Tories.

They said that ignoring Jeremy Corbyn made conversations with voters easier.

European Union leaders have dismissed the notion that the early elections would give the British government any leverage in the upcoming Brexit negotiations.
