"Georgia continues to be a national leader in over-the-year job growth, as our employers added 113,600 jobs since April of last year", Butler continued.

Akers said that the unemployment rate increased because more people are entering the labor market.

This view is supported by data available with the labor bureau, which shows that job creation could actually be at the lowest in the last eight years.

In April previous year, the statewide unemployment rate was 5.6 percent.

The state Office of Labor and Workforce Development says the April jobless rate of 3.9 percent was up from 3.6 percent in March.

Employment Security paid unemployment insurance benefits to 60,386 people in April. In all, almost 16 crore people in the workforce were under-employed in this manner.

The construction sector and the education and health services sector each added 1,500 jobs in April 2017. Aside from Atlanta's gain of 87,200 positions year over year, metro areas adding at least 1,200 jobs or more were Augusta, Savannah, Gainesville, Warner Robins, Athens, Macon and Albany. Leisure and hospitality and professional and business services each eliminated 900 jobs, manufacturing was down 800 and 100 was cut from other services.

The mining and logging and information sectors were flat.

During the past year, nonagricultural employment in the state has grown by 5,500 jobs.

Monthly hours worked across all jobs decreased by 2 million hours last month, official data showed.

Government saw the largest job growth last month, up 1,900 jobs, followed by transportation, warehousing and utilities, which saw an increase of 1,600. In April 2016, the unemployment rate was 5.4 percent. That rate - called a U-6 rate - measures "unemployed, underemployed and those who are not looking but who want a job". An earlier report had pegged joblessness at a fiveyear high of 5% in 2015, and under-employment at a staggering 35% of the over-15 years labour force.

The jobless rate was the lowest since the first quarter of 2012 when it was 9.5%.
