Why Was James Comey Fired? President Trump Contradicts His Team

Donald Trump branded ousted Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey a "showboat" yesterday, an attack that was swiftly contradicted by the agency's acting chief who pledged the FBI's probe into possible ties to Russian Federation would proceed with vigour.

"If they can keep all 52 together, then it won't matter", said Michael Gerhardt, a constitutional law professor at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said on Tuesday that Mr Rosenstein drafted the memo raising concerns about Mr Comey on his own accord.

After comments that the administration intends to move "very quickly" on the process, a reporter in the White House press pool asked the president if that could mean finding a permanent replacement to spearhead the agency by the end of the week. Also interviewed were: -Adam Lee, special agent in charge of the FBI's office in Richmond, Virginia. -acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe. He dismissed as less desirable at least two of the 14 candidates under consideration, ex-FBI agent and former Rep. Mike Rogers of MI and Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, explaining that "these are not normal circumstances". An ex-FBI agent, Rogers drew the backing of the FBI Agents Association, which said his diverse background makes him the best choice. "I've talked to the president. We need to understand the true nature of the events that led up to director Comey's dismissal", Schumer said Thursday.

But Democrats - and some Republicans - saw the move to get rid of Comey as an assault on the FBI's Russian Federation probe and demanded that it be turned over to an independent special prosecutor or commission.

The decision is subject to confirmation by the U.S. Senate, where Republicans have a majority. Republicans hold a 52-seat majority in the Senate.

Trump didn't provide further details Friday on whether he was taping conversations. Mark Warner of Virginia, the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, said his panel or another committee would "absolutely" subpoena such tapes.

Warner also said he hopes to have Comey testify in a public hearing before his committee. Comey declined, instead offering "honest".

A poll released on Sunday showed how few people support President Donald Trump's decision to fire former FBI Director James Comey, while also acknowledging the extent to which many Americans have no opinion about the decision at all. Later, however, they said that Trump had planned to fire Comey regardless.

White House spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders disputed the report and said the president would "never even suggest the expectation of personal loyalty".

The FBI director serves a 10-year term but can be replaced by the president. They are among more than a dozen candidates Trump is considering, a group that includes several lawmakers, attorneys and law enforcement officials.

The first candidate to arrive for interviews was Alice Fisher, a high-ranking Justice Department official in the George W. Bush administration.

Sen. Dianne Feinstein said Thursday that Rosenstein should recuse himself from the investigation.
