The State Department summoned Turkish Ambassador Serdar Kilic following violence between Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's guards and protesters in Washington, D.C., this week.

The U.S. State Department condemned the attack as an assault on free speech and warned Turkey that the action would not be tolerated.

Nine people were hurt and two were arrested when Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's security personnel attacked protesters carrying the flag of a Kurdish political party while they rallied outside the Turkish envoy's residence on Wednesday.

During his visit to the Turkish embassy residence in Washington DC after the meeting, his supporters clashed with another group who gathered outside the embassy building in order to protest Erdoğan's policies in Turkey.

Lawsuits can also be sought, said McCain, as "we can identify these people", but the first step should be to throw the ambassador out of the United States.

The fight ultimately left 12 people injured and led to two arrests.

"The case is now under investigation and we are not going to go into specifics or speculate on what may happen".

"We should throw their ambassador the hell out of the United States of America", said McCain on MSNBC's Morning Joe show, in response to video that appears to show the violence.

Congressmen like John McCain (R-AZ) are demanding a decisive response to the Turkish officials' actions. His appearance at the Brookings Institution during the 2016 Nuclear Security Summit was marred when his security detail roughed up demonstrators and tried to eject "undesired" journalists. Some of the men kicked victims while they were on the ground.

The Anadolu Agency, a state-owned Turkish news service, reported that members of the president's security team were involved in the attack.

They "began aggressively provoking Turkish-American citizens who had peacefully assembled to greet the President".

According to the video, one of Erdogan's bodyguard speaks with him while protesters chant slogans saying, "baby killer Erdogan".

McCain said "this kind of thing can not go unresponded to diplomatically".

"This is the United States of America", McCain wrote.

"The Turkish-Americans responded in self-defense", the statement from the Turkish embassy said.

Turkey's foreign minister on Thursday called on the Trump administration to replace its envoy to the anti-Islamic State coalition - the latest sign of Turkish frustration with the USA war strategy in Syria and of mounting tensions between the two North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies.
