Marine Le Pen's National Front party is betting on June legislative elections to become the leading opposition force to French President Emmanuel Macron, who defeated her in a landslide victory.

In her first public appearance since her crushing May 7 defeat in the presidential election, Ms Le Pen said in a television interview that she will run to represent her northern bastion of Henin-Beaumont.

"I couldn't imagine not heading my troops in a battle I consider it fundamental", she added.

"We need lawmakers that are not complicit and defend the interests of the French and France". A new failure could jinx her bid to unite the National Front and to make it Fr.

The FN bills itself as France's main opposition party, a label contested by The Republicans.

Marine Le Pen on Thursday sought to play down differences within the party, but acknowledged that the question of the euro had unnerved a few in her camp. Its woes were compounded when Marion Maréchal Le Pen, the leader's niece and one of only two sitting far-right MPs, announced that she was retiring from politics.
