White House press secretary Sean Spicer didn't dispute the details in the New York Times article but offered a different interpretation of the president's intended meaning. But he made clear it was not his intention for Pres. Trump or other White House officials to use the document to justify firing Comey, which is what they have done.

Rosenstein on Wednesday announced the appointment of former Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Robert Mueller as special counsel to investigate Russia's alleged interference in last year's U.S. election, and possible collusion with Trump's campaign to tilt the vote in the billionaire businessman's favor.

Mr Rosenstein, the No 2 Justice Department official, named Mr Mueller amid mounting pressure in Congress for an independent investigation beyond existing FBI and congressional probes into the Russian Federation issue.

Rosenstein may have been asked about his decision to open an independent investigation, as well as the circumstances surrounding the memo he wrote about Comey.

"The need for former Director Comey to come testify in public soon is as great as ever", said the Senate's top Democrat, Chuck Schumer of NY.

Mr Trump categorically denied he asked Mr Comey to drop his probe of Mr Flynn, whom he fired on Feb 14 for misleading Vice-President Mike Pence, about the extent of his conversations a year ago with Russia's ambassador.

"I think we'll have a more hard time getting information here for the intelligence committee", Republican Senator Ron Johnson said.

The Justice Department on Friday distributed prepared remarks that Rosenstein delivered to Congress in separate briefings.

Trump referred to Comey's testimony at a recent Capitol Hill hearing after which the Justice Department ended up having to amend part of his testimony regarding last year's probe of Hillary Clinton's email practices.

Rosenstein had the responsibility of deciding to appoint a special counsel because Attorney General Jeff Sessions, a former surrogate for the Trump campaign, has recused himself from decisions on the issue.

Donald Trump met with a group of lawyers on Thursday to go over how to deal with the ongoing Russian Federation investigation.

He'd previously said he might announce his nominee before he left. Michigan Republican Rep. Dave Trott says lawmakers pressed Rosenstein on the memo but he declined to respond. Tim Scott, R-S.C. "I do think that the special prosecutor provides a sense of calm and confidence perhaps for the American people, which is incredibly important". That telling cast Rosenstein as the prime person behind the decision to fire Comey, even though Trump later stated that he already had chose to termination the director before asking Rosenstein for the memo. In a Fortune article in April, Brian Katulis detailed his fears that America would become a fascist pseudo-democracy, one where Trump and his family profited off his power and loyal former generals enforced his diktats.

"Believe me, there's no collusion", the president continued. Rosenstein denounced that decision as "profoundly wrong and unfair". That is likely one of the reasons Rosenstein named a special counsel Wednesday to lead an independent investigation into whether anyone on the Trump campaign cooperated with Russian Federation.

Asked point-blank if he'd done anything that might merit prosecution or even impeachment, Trump said no - and then added of the lingering allegations and questions: "I think it's totally ridiculous".
