Trump denies asking Comey to drop probe, decries 'witch hunt'

The President also suggested that the investigation that will now be led by former FBI Director Robert Mueller was also motivated by an attempt to tarnish his election victory past year. The news was announced by Trumps very own Justice Department and according to members of the administration it was done without prior notice. Trump has repeatedly denied any collusion between his campaign and the Kremlin, amid accusations from U.S. intelligence that Russian President Vladimir Putin orchestrated a sweeping campaign to tilt the vote in the Republican's favor.

President Donald Trump is assailing the naming of a special counsel as "the single greatest witch hunt of a politician in American history!"

A senior US senator said on Friday that he expects Congress' investigation of Russian Federation and the 2016 USA election to go ahead, even after the appointment of a special counsel, and said Congress has a broader mandate that extends to financial conflicts of interest.

Trump said he was about to name a replacement for Comey, another move to settle the waters.

First there was then-FBI Director James Comey's announcement in March that the probe was focusing not just generally on Russian hacking but on alleged ties between Russia and the Trump campaign; now we learn it's pointing more toward the top. One of the attendees, speaking on condition of anonymity, described Rosenstein as anxious and nervous and said he drank multiple glasses of water "and spilled one".

Trump clearly knew what he wanted to say as he took a few questions at a news briefing with visiting Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos. Trump wrote. He initially misspelled the word counsel as he referred to Democratic former President Barack Obama and former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and corrected himself in a later tweet. "I now have significantly greater confidence that the investigation will follow the facts wherever they lead". But Mueller's decision to leave his job at WilmerHale, the law firm he has worked at since 2014, could actually be a little problematic, as the firm's client list includes several key people who are linked to Team Trump.

The president's tweets drew little reaction from fellow Republicans, who instead joined Democrats in heaping praise on Mueller, a longtime respected lawman who served under George W. Bush and Barack Obama, preceding Comey as head of the Federal Bureau of Investigation. "And numerous questions he declined to answer came down to his concern of whether he might interfere with the investigation by Robert Mueller".

The newspaper cites the White House's official written account of the Oval Office meeting.

Trump cited displeasure with the FBI's Russian Federation probe as a factor in dismissing Comey.

Some of Trump's Republican allies, like Congressman Jason Amash, have begun cautiously suggesting impeachment is no longer impossible.

The Senate intelligence committee also asked acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe to turn over any notes Comey might have made regarding discussions he had with White House or Justice Department officials about Russia's efforts to influence the election.

Chaffetz has scheduled a hearing on Comey's firing next Wednesday, although it's not clear if Comey will testify. Joe Lieberman, former Oklahoma Gov.

Trump is preparing to leave town Friday on his first foreign trip, and aides have been hopeful the journey will be a chance for the administration to get back on track after weeks of chaos and distractions.
