"The French have chosen a new president", Le Pen told supporters.

Trump described Macron's victory over far-right opponent Marine Le Pen in the French presidential runoff as a "big win".

Citizens in some overseas territories and many French expats abroad have begun voting.

A poll of almost 7,000 voters on Sunday by Harris Interactive found that 59 percent of Macron's voters had chosen him primarily to stop Le Pen becoming president, reflecting the distaste that still clings to a party long considered a pariah in France for its xenophobic associations.

Le Pen had called for France to leave the 28-nation European Union and drop the shared euro currency in favor of reinstating the French franc.

"We remain largely constructive of the equity market and view that the path of least resistance is higher", said Bill Northey, chief investment officer at Private Client Group of U.S. Bank.

Some 44 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds backed the Front National leader, compared with 56 per cent who voted for centrist Emmanuel Macron, according to projections.

She gave her reaction to journalists in the German capital:"Emmanuel Macron carries the hopes of millions of people in France as well as people in Germany and across Europe".

Webber said: "Adam's extremely clear writing and analysis impressed me immediately: his eye for human detail and careful examination of the stages of the Macron surge add a thrilling dimension to this tale of unexpected political victory".

World leaders have been responding the election of Emmanuel Macron.

Macron ran as an independent, but he founded En Marche! less than a year ago. When he resigned from Socialist President François Hollande's government in 2016 to launch his En Marche!

Monday was a French national holiday marking decades of peace in Western Europe, something Macron made a cornerstone of his campaign against Le Pen's brand of nationalist populism. Voters whittled down 11 candidates in a first-round poll in April to two from outside the political establishment. Ironically, it seems Le Pen has inadvertently united the country - against her. Attention was turning to other regional economic indicators, they said. Mr Macron opposes any rapprochement with Russian Federation, while Ms Le Pen met Vladimir Putin in Moscow recently and has previously stated her approval of Russia's 2014 annexation of Crimea.

Now, that the Presidential elections are over, political parties are gearing up for the legislative elections in June.

Macron will officially take over from French President Francois Hollande next Sunday, but an exact date for the meeting between the new president and Merkel has not been set.

Whoever wins the presidency will need to perform well in those crucial elections if they want to win a parliamentary majority to push through their proposals.

Le Pen says she will lead the opposition to Macron.
