An 8-year-old girl was among the dead - the youngest known victim - and her mother and sister were among 59 people wounded in what May called "a callous terrorist attack".

Reports say there were roughly 10 young people with her and she remained with them until it was safe.

As feelings of horror and grief took over Manchester, the city displayed its true Mancunian spirit. Parents waiting outside to pick up their children waded into the fleeing crowds desperately hunting for loved ones. Twitter and Facebook lit up with heartbreaking appeals for the missing.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the bombing, which took place at the end of the concert when the audience was streaming toward the exits. Taxis offered to give stranded people free rides home while some residents opened their homes to provide lodging.

"All acts of terrorism are cowardly but this attack stands out for its appalling sickening cowardice, deliberately targeting innocent, defenseless children and young people who should have been enjoying one of the most memorable nights of their lives", May said outside her Downing Street office in London. An official with the ambulance service said early Tuesday that about 12 children were transported to Royal Manchester Children's Hospital.

Mayor of Greater Manchester, Andy Burnham, also took to Twitter to express his condolences. "It was just a race to get out really", said 14-year-old Charlotte Fairclough, who got tickets as a Christmas present.

US President Donald Trump described the attack as the work of "evil losers".

"This wicked ideology must be obliterated. And I mean completely obliterated", he added.
