US airstrikes target pro-Assad forces in Syria

The USA Today reports that A US airstrike in Syria Thursday targeted pro-regime forces who were threatening a coalition base where advisers train anti-Islamic State fighters, according to a US military official.

The pro-regime convoy had come within 18 miles the al-Tanf base, which houses US and British special forces in southern Syria, and breached the "deconfliction zone" around the base.

In a statement, the US-led coalition said it had struck "pro-regime forces. that posed a threat to U.S. and partner forces".

U.S. warplanes have struck pro-Syrian government forces that were said to pose a threat to American troops and allied rebels operating near the border with Jordan.

A day earlier, the US-led coalition struck Syrian forces near Tanf as the forces were advancing toward an area controlled by the US-led rebels, where British and United States bases are reportedly located.

The US-led coalition said the pro-regime forces consisted of Syrian and Iranian-backed militias and "posed a threat to US and partner forces". Speaking to reporters, U.S. Defense Secretary Jim Mattis said the U.S. will defend its troops in case of "aggressive" steps against them.

The coalition tried to warn off the pro-Syrian government forces prior to carrying out the airstrike.

"This is not only an attack in Syria and against Syria, but also against Geneva [negotiations]".

Syria has been in a state of civil war since 2011 after the regime launched a crackdown on pro-democracy protesters.

"The Syrian army will not be prevented by any force on earth from continuing its duty in fighting anyone that tries to occupy Syria", the SCMM said.

A Syrian military official confirmed the strike on state TV a day after the strike.

"They were potentially probing to see how close they could get to At Tanf", the official said.

According to Jacques, while the USA hit a Syrian tank and two bulldozers, the convoy has still not fully retreated from the deconfliction zone.

"Whatever the reason for the US strike was, it was illegitimate and marked another flagrant violation of Syria's sovereignty", Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on a trip to Cyprus.

Washington:US military aircraft have carried out an airstrike on a convoy of pro-Syrian government fighters advancing toward the positions of foreign-backed militants in the south of the Arab country.
