After Stabbing, Portland's Mayor Wants 2 Right-Wing Demonstrations Canceled

The ACLU of OR tweeted in defense of the alt-right rally, telling Wheeler the government did not have the power to discriminate against the organizers due to their political beliefs.

Mayor Wheeler also called on the federal government to revoke its permit for the June 4 rally and not issue another for the June 10 rally. He wants the government to rescind the permit for the June 4 rally and not issue one for the June 10 rally.

Wheeler called on the federal agency to "IMMEDIATELY REVOKE" the permit for Sunday's demonstration and not to issue a permit for an anti-Muslim event scheduled for June 10 in a Facebook post Monday, saying the events could "only exacerbate an already hard situation".

On Friday afternoon, two men were stabbed to death while trying to help two young women who were being targeted by hate speech.

He went on to say that the city of Portland needs to process "this horrific crime of hate, bigotry, and terrorism". The attacks occurred hours before the start of Ramadan, a month-long Muslim holy period of fasting, prayer and charity. Gibson has already gotten the necessary permit for his June 4 event (scheduled just 10 days after the horrific and deadly train stabbing), and he claims that if the City of Portland refuses to issue additionally necessary permits, his event could end up being more risky than it would otherwise have been.

Following the recent race-motivated stabbings in Portland, Oregon, Mayor Ted Wheeler has called for the cancellation of two "Alt-Right" rallies in the city.

Mr Wheeler said his main concern was the participants were "coming to pedal a message of hatred", saying hate speech was not protected by the constitution.

"It's a hard pill for progressives to swallow", a University of Washington law professor told Knauf, "but hate speech is protected".

He had been seen at a Portland "free speech" rally in April, draped in an American flag and reportedly chanting racial slurs.

Joey Gibson leads a pro-Trump rally on May 1, 2017 in Seattle. He "is using this as an opportunity to use these two dead people to silence us", Gibson said. Since President Donald Trump's election in November, the city has been beset by violence at political rallies from groups on the left and the right. But Bishop said that "Christian has nothing to do with us".

However, free speech advocates said he shouldn't be allowed to regulate political activity regardless of what other people do.

Jeremy Joseph Christian made a first court appearance Tuesday on aggravated murder and other charges but did not enter a plea. He faces several misdemeanors including two counts of second-degree intimidation.

A third person, Micah David-Cole Fletcher, 21, was also injured in the attack and remains hospitalized.

Earlier, in an interview with CNN, Wheeler called the three men heroes.

In response to the obvious question - is Wheeler's refusal to grant permits constitutional? - the mayor's spokesman, Michael Cox, said Wheeler "believes it's right".

A day before the attack, cellphone video confirmed by police Sgt. Pete Simpson shows Christian using expletives as he rants about Muslims, Christians and Jews on a train. "I'm a libertarian. I'm not right wing, I'm for gay marriage, I'm against the drug wars".

The so-called "alt-right", is a far-right movement that has been linked to white nationalism, racism, misogyny and anti-Semitism.
