Fact-Checking Trump's Speech On Paris Climate Agreement Withdrawal

"As someone who cares deeply about the environment, which I do, I can not in good conscience support a deal that punishes the United States - which is what it does - the world's leader in environmental protection, while imposing no meaningful obligations on the world's leading polluters", Trump said in his speech outside the White House.

The US president has announced that the second-largest emitter of greenhouse gasses will withdraw from the Paris climate accord, saying the deal agreed by more than 190 nations unfairly benefited countries like India and China.

Video: What is the Paris Agreement? "We don't want other leaders and other countries laughing at us anymore. And they won't be".

Trump offered no details about how, or when, a formal withdrawal would happen, and at one point suggested a renegotiation could take place.

Although Mr Trump has pulled the U.S. out of the deal, he insisted that he "will work to ensure that America remains the world's leader on environmental issues, but under a framework that is fair and where the burdens and responsibilities are equally shared among the many nations all around the world".

"The agreement can not be renegotiated", France, Germany and Italy said in a joint statement.

French paper Le Figaro largely led with various headlines slamming Trump's decision, saying the U.S. President had just "given the finger to the rest of the world" while Le Monde slammed the decision as part of a "systematic attack" from Trump's administration on the legacy of Barack Obama. It joins Syria and Nicaragua as the only countries not party to it.

Environmentalists in the country condemned Trump's decision on Friday even as they expressed doubts about how ready China is to pick up the slack.

The COP 23 talks will be held in Bonn from November 6-17, with Germany inviting Fiji's PM to act as president to give a voice to those on the front line of climate change. "Paris withdrawal leaves American workers & families behind", she said in a tweet.

In New York, some major buildings, like the World Trade Centre and City Hall, were lit green in solidarity with the climate agreement, echoing a move in Paris.

"But begin negotiations to re-enter either the Paris accord or an entirely new transaction".

The US president called his counterparts in Britain, Canada, France and Germany to explain his decision.

However, the United States president was unclear on how he will reduce emissions from his country, which is second only to China when it comes to emitting fossil fuels.

Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker told a business conference on Friday that China and the European Union recognised the need for global solutions and this was nowhere more important than full implementation of the Paris agreement.

Trump on Thursday said he was withdrawing from the deal, rejecting the advice of Mackenzie and many others, including his daughter Ivanka. But the confluence of a slowing economy and heavy public pressure to tackle air pollution have ensured the Chinese leadership is, by all accounts, set to follow through on its commitments to mitigating carbon emissions - even if the United States is not.

Inventor and entrepreneur Elon Musk said he would keep his promise to end his participation in two presidential councils after Trump issued his decision.

He added that climate action has tremendous "win-win" potential for all nations, including India.

"We will not ignore the science and reality of climate change", he said, adding that Trump's "reckless" decision could have "devastating repercussions" for the planet.

"Therefore, in order to fulfil my solemn duty to protect America and its citizens, the U.S. will withdraw from the Paris climate accord". "I do respect this decision but I do think it is an actual mistake both for the U.S. and for our planet..."

"I feel that China is not eager to take on the leadership role", said Ming Sung, the former chief Asia Pacific representative of the Clean Air Task Force and a senior adviser to a number of environmental groups.
