Is Andy Rubin's Essential working on a Google Glass like prototype?

Essential Smartphone will be Completely Bezel-Less

Plus, Essential is supposedly working on integrating augmented reality to its smart glasses.

A patent belonging to Essential suggests that the company is considering dual-lens display smart glasses, according to Patently Apple.

Andy Rubin's Essential might be developing a potential smart glass.

The patent also notes that "Based on the environment that the user sees, and based on the direction of the user's gaze, the processor can display an image to augment the environment around the user".

Essential engineers wrote down an example of its use, where the wearer can look at a barcode of a product and get more affordable choices thanks to the wearable's processor. Maybe you will be wearing a Essential glass one day. At the moment, we only have a basic understanding of how these glasses will work, with a "dual-mode display" embedded in the lenses, and quite a few cameras pointing every which way.

"The one or more lenses 510, 520 can be prescription lenses, photosensitive lenses, sunglass lenses, etc".

However, the patent also shows that Essential and Rubin are a bit more ambitious than simply making its own pair of Snapchat Spectacles.

The AR-use cases for the Essential Smart Glasses are described with situations such as real-time matching of product prices in a store.

The out-facing cameras would potentially be used for photo and video recording, while the in-facing cameras could track eye movement.

Rubin also expressed that he doesn't want Essential to simply be a smartphone maker, he believes that the company should go push the boundaries of technology, as pointed out by Android Authority.

Andy Rubin, the father of Android, thinks he can make a better product than Google Glass. In an interview with the Wired earlier this week, Rubin stated that Google Glass failed "not because the tech was bad but because the world wasn't ready to wear them". With that in mind, Essential could very well be planning to release these AR glasses at retail, but it might just be waiting for the right time to strike.
