Curry urged teammates to just be themselves vs Cavs

At the Oracle Arena in Oakland, the Golden State Warriors will take on the Cleveland Cavaliers.

It's not clear if it provides much comfort. And there is no doubt he would have been eager to go against the team that jettisoned him to the Mavericks to make room for Durant.

But on Thursday they were dealing with something new and different, better than what they've faced before by an order of magnitude.

"I mean, you take one of the best teams that we had ever assembled previous year, that we saw in the regular season and the postseason, and then in the offseason you add a high-powered offensive talent like that and a great basketball IQ like that, that's what stands out", James said. "No matter how many days that you have to prepare, you can't simulate what they have". "We got to figure out how to combat that, which is going to be a tough challenge for us".

As James spoke, he sounded like a character in a disaster movie whose task is to save the world against impending doom. Especially after a historic performance from Kevin Durant and seemingly flawless compliment of a performance by none other than 2-time MVP, Stephen Curry.

He's going to be a problem.

James said he would do his best to be ready for the series opener when his mind was elsewhere, concerned for his wife and children back in Ohio.

"You've got to credit their defense", Lue said. This time the obstacles are more than the ones of their own creation.

He started the year in Dallas, got traded to and ultimately waived by Philadelphia, and signed with Cleveland because the Cavs knew they needed - and wanted - another tough guy who could clog the lane and had playoff experience. Given the Cavs averaged just 12.9 turnovers in the post-season previously, it seems like something they can easily fix and if they do it should take the edge off the Warriors running game and the 27 fast-break points they rolled up on Cleveland.

It was a pretty evenly matched game through quarter number 1, as the Warriors held a 35-30 lead.

If those numbers normalize and it could easily be a 10 to 15-point swing in Cleveland's favour.

The most underplayed aspect, however, is the work of Durant and Curry. J.R. Smith was 1-of-4 for three points. Kyle Korver and Daron Williams both went scoreless in a combined 38 minutes of action. Toronto's Tristan Thompson - an energizing nightmare for the Cavs against the Warriors a year ago, was flat. That can not happen, even if Kevin Love wound up grabbing 21 rebounds, 16 defensive. Warriors coach Mike Brown said. "I'll be better Sunday".

But the Warriors can be informed by their past too. Last year, the Warriors had the Cavs against the ropes before Cleveland won three straight to win the championship.

"We did a great job of covering the 3-point line but other than that they played a hell of a game", James said. "And that's our best effort to win this championship, is just be ourselves".

They can't dream of concealing the most lethal offensive attack in the National Basketball Association, one that features particularly remarkable work in transition.

"I think that's how Cleveland is going to approach it, make it a physical game", Michael Cooper, now the coach of the WNBA's Atlanta Dream who went through some epic Lakers-Celtics battles as a player in the 1980s, said before the series began.

To be fair, playing the Warriors is a slew of pick-your-poison decisions. What occurred on June 1st won't happen again.

And the Warriors expect him to continue to press his advantage. So while he was tweeting Thursday about Santa Claus and Australian Rules Football, Durant was dunking on the sort of nonexistent defense typically seen at an All-Star Game and not the NBA Finals.

The Warriors? Man, they sure run a attractive offense. "That (arm sleeve) was the only way I could really come close".
