Merkel urges speedy Brexit talks after United Kingdom vote

German Chancellor Angela Merkel says she doesn't expect any delays in the start of Brexit talks between the European Union and the United Kingdom despite the outcome of this week's British election.

Angela Merkel while her press conference in Mexico said that Germany is ready for the negotiations with the United Kingdom on Brexit. We want to do this quickly, respecting the calendar.

"We don't know when Brexit talks start", European Council President Donald Tusk tweeted Friday as the election results became clear. "We will defend the interests of the 27 member states, and Britain will defend its own interests", she told a press conference. "Britain is part of Europe, even if it will no longer be part of the European Union".

The prospect of a hung Parliament would throw serious doubt over Brexit negotiations, due to begin in earnest in just 10 days.

Jean-Claude Juncker, head of the European Commission, said he wanted discussions to proceed without delay, while Michel Barnier, the EU's chief negotiator for Brexit, said "negotiations should start when United Kingdom is ready".

Protracted negotiations over the formation of a new government - or even a second general election in 2017 - could put back the start of formal talks, squeezing even further the limited time available to forge a complex withdrawal agreement and a separate deal on future trade arrangements. Mrs May noted that the country should be guided by this Government through the crucial Brexit talks. We know when they must end. "United Kingdom wanted it, but is still not ready to negotiate".

Ireland's prime minister-elect Leo Varadkar said the election result was an opportunity for Ireland.

And Scotland's First Minister Nicola Sturgeon called on all parties to "join together" to keep the United Kingdom and Scotland in the single market.
