Schiff says firing Mueller would echo Watergate

Trump's biggest problem - he can't be saved from himself: Aaron Blake

A day after The New York Times published an article detailing that memo, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein appointed former FBI Director Robert Mueller as special counsel in the investigation.

In May, Rosenstein had announced the appointment of Mueller, a former FBI director, to serve as special counsel overseeing the FBI's investigation into Russia's meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion with members of the Trump campaign.

Still, Chris Ruddy, the CEO of Newsmax and a Trump friend, suggested the president was already thinking about "terminating" Mueller from his position as special counsel.

"I think the president is pretty confident that this is all going to come out in the wash and ultimately, he's still going to be president and this stuff is going to go away", said Gingrich.

But a source close to the President said Trump is being counseled to steer clear of such a dramatic move like firing the special counsel. He made the comments after being seen leaving the White House Monday.

"Director Mueller is going to have the full independence he needs to conduct that investigation, " Rosenstein said.

"I won't mince words, " Leahy told Rosenstein on Tuesday. But I'm noticing a trend here: If something is bad for Republicans, Newt thinks it should be abolished.

Schiff told CNN's Anderson Cooper if Mueller was ousted, Congress would have to re-establish the Independent Counsel Act that expired following the impeachment of President Bill Clinton.

Sean Spicer, the White House press secretary, said Ruddy "never spoke to the president regarding this issue".

Ingraham did note that Ruddy is a friend of hers, and noted that she thought he would clarify his comments later on Tuesday.

Sessions' appearance before the intelligence committee is an indication of just how much the Russian Federation investigation has shaded his tenure.

Conservative commentator Ann Coulter offered a similar message, tweeting, "Now that we know TRUMP IS NOT UNDER INVESTIGATION, Sessions should take it back & fire Mueller". If Mr. Rosenstein refused, Mr. Trump could fire him, too - a series of events that would recall the "Saturday Night Massacre" during Watergate, when President Richard M. Nixon sought to dismiss a special prosecutor, Archibald Cox. "With respect to this subject, only the president or his attorneys are authorized to comment".

Spicer, the spokesman, declined to say then that Sessions enjoyed Trump's confidence, though spokeswoman Sarah Huckabee Sanders said later in the week that the president had confidence "in all of his Cabinet".

"The chain of command for the special counsel is only directly to the attorney general - and in this case, the acting attorney general", he said.

Under Justice Department regulations created to ensure a measure of independence for the special counsel, Rosenstein may only fire Mueller for "good cause".

Less than a month ago, he called Mueller a "superb choice", someone whose "reputation is impeccable for honesty and integrity". Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) pointed out on Twitter that, if Trump fired Mueller, Congress could get to choose the next special counsel - and it might end up being Mueller.

"He had a private conversation with the President on his views about all sorts of matters potentially about the investigation", Ruddy said. "I think the best vindication for the president is to let the investigation go on independently and thoroughly".
