L’OPEP estime que la baisse des stocks observable de janvier à avril devrait se poursuivre au second semestre

Les cours du pétrole ont terminé en nette baisse mercredi, se repliant à leur plus bas niveau en clôture depuis mi-novembre dans la foulée d'un rapport faisant état d'une offre abondante de produits pétroliers aux Etats-Unis. Dans les échanges électroniques sur le New York Mercantile Exchange (Nymex), le baril de "light sweet crude" (WTI) pour le contrat de juillet gagnait 19 cents à 44,65 dollars.

Les réserves se sont certes repliées de 1,7 million de barils, mais moins que les 2,4 millions attendus par les experts du panel Bloomberg.

Ce maintien des stocks à un niveau élevé est d'autant plus préoccupant que les raffineries américaines ont parallèlement augmenté leur cadence, un contexte en théorie propice à la réduction des volumes stockés.

Le cours du pétrole enrayait, les croissances de mardi, tandis que les chiffres de la fédération privée de l'American Petroleum Institute (API) sur la progression sur une semaine des réserves américaines alarmaient les marchés.

Autre élément notable à prendre en compte: la publication du rapport du DoE est intervenue en même temps que celui de l'Agence internationale de l'énergie (AIE) indiquant que la production de pétrole dans les pays non membres de l'Opep (Organisation des pays exportateurs de pétrole) augmentera en 2018.

Même si la consommation de brut reste soutenue, les stocks se réduisent lentement et le redressement de la production en Libye et au Nigeria ces dernières semaines efface en partie l'effort de réduction de l'OPEP (- 1,2 million de barils par jour) prolongé jusqu'en mars 2018 lors de la réunion du cartel, fin mai, à Vienne.

Les réserves d'essence ont elles augmenté de 2,1 millions de barils, alors que les estimations des économistes compilées par Bloomberg prévoyaient un repli de 1 million.
