The Relay for Life of Walker County will be held from 6-10 p.m. this Saturday - in a new location, on the Walker County Courthouse square, as organizers try to increase participation in the event.

Locally, the American Cancer Society has raised more than half of its $60,000 goal. The following year, more than 300 supporters joined the overnight event and since then, Relay for Life has grown into a worldwide movement that has raised almost $5 billion to fight cancer.

The new things this year are a quarter raffle that beings at 8 p.m. Friday in the Multipurpose Building. Each ceremony is created to honor those lost to cancer and bring support to those affected by that loss.

It was a time to remember those lost to cancer, the survivors and the ones that are still fighting the battle. "I always look forward to that survivor lap, that sea of purple - to know that I'm here for one more year, that I'm here able to celebrate my cancer survivorship".

"We have a great committee, and we have a lot of fun", he said.

This year's event's theme is "Go!" Checks can be made payable to Relay for Life.

Len Wilson, a cancer survivor from Prophetstown, will give a testimonial and play music.

One of which is getting people to donate money because they question where it is going. This year, honorary chair Dale Roberts will be among those leading the survivors on the opening lap.

Standing at the south end of Carson City-Crystal's Community Field on Friday evening, the Carson City administrator shared her story of overcoming breast cancer after being diagnosed on February 13, 2009.

Messenger noted that everyone who has been diagnosed with cancer is considered a "survivor", not only those who are in remission.

Kolwelter said beyond the fundraising, Relay for Life was created as a time of celebration and remembrance for those who wish to participate.

The funds are used to support cancer research and vital support services for people with cancer and their families.

"For cancer patients, they're accepting the challenge, they're going to fight cancer, they're going to beat cancer, and that's why our slogan was finish the fight", explained Becker.

"We chose to jump the goal because we are merging two events", Kolwelter said.

This Saturday's Randolph County Relay For Life event will feature free entertainment, plenty of food, a silent auction and lots of activities created to raise funds to help fight against cancer.
