BJP leading in Shimla civic body polls

At a polling booth in Shimla during the voting for Municipal Corporation elections on Friday

The Bharatiya Janta Party on Saturday created history by winning 17 out of 34 wards in the Shimla Municipal Corporation election, The Indian Express reported.

The Congress strategy of supporting candidates seems to have backfired as the party had announced its support to candidates on 28 wards. Independent candidates won three wards, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist) won one seat. Only at Tarahall polling booth under Kaithu ward, candidates complained of EVM malfunctioning and demanded repoll. But the party is all set to grab the reins of the country's oldest civic body for the first time by electing its Mayor with the support of an Independent candidate. This means the Congress has the support of 15 candidates, still short of the BJP's 17 winners.

"We are going to elect our Mayor and Deputy Mayor with the support of an Independent", a senior BJP leader told IANS.

Now the race for the post of Mayor of Shimla, reserved for an SC woman candidate, has hotted up. But this time it would be the councilors who would elect both mayor and deputy mayor as state government has scrapped direct election for mayoral posts. It thus ruled the civic body with its three members in the 25-seat house - the majority of the councillors were from the BJP.

Shimla Municipal Corporation was held on last Friday and the counting of votes starts today from 8 AM.

BJP's Puran Mal from Khalini seat recorded victory by the largest margin.

The stakes were high for six-time Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh too in these elections, as he was trying to prove that he was still a mass leader and could lead the party in the forthcoming Assembly polls. "We will form the next corporation", he said.
