The 27-year-old from Stockport, who is now ranked 115th in the world, won 7-6 (7-3) 7-6 (9-7) against American Maria Sanchez.

Playing in the semi-finals of the competition for the first time, top seed Konta was quickly into her rhythm, breaking Rybarikova in the fifth game of the match.

Konta, 26, was never in trouble against Slovakia's Rybarikova despite having to wait until late in the second set to grab the decisive break.

World number 49 Kontaveit built a 4-1 lead in the opening set and although her errors were punished in a one-sided second-set tiebreak, she held the edge on the big points in the decider to triumph in two hours.

Meanwhile, British number three Naomi Broady moved into the last eight of the Aegon Trophy on her home court in Manchester. However, Konta won five of the next six games to close out the victory, taking it on a fourth match point.

"It feels pretty good and I'm really happy to have made it to the end of the week", she told Eurosport after the match.

"It was definitely a nice little comeback".

First grass-court final ever for Johanna Konta.

Having reached the top six in the world rankings last month, she is also optimistic about an improved performance at Wimbledon where she was knocked out in the third round a year ago, her best performance in the tournament.

It sets up a last-four meeting with Magdalena Rybarikova or Kristie Ahn as she chases what would also be a first title on grass.
