LOOK: Rory McIlroy claps back at major winner who called him 'bored' on Twitter

Rory McIlroy has hit back at suggestions he is "bored" with golf after making an early exit from the US Open for the second successive year. That's not up for debate and professional athletes should always expect criticism when they fail to perform.

Elkington, who competes occasionally on the Champions Tour, won 10 PGA Tour tournaments, including the 1995 PGA Championship and two Players Championships.

Elkington got roasted by the far more accomplished McIlroy.

Elkington was watching the U.S. Open before he made a backhanded compliment about McIlroy.

Elkington added that without Tiger, the "threshold is prolly 4 majors with 100 mill in the bank".

However, that didn't stop Elkington passing comment about where McIlroy's head is at and, after noticing it on Twitter, the 28-year-old took things into his own hands.

"Nobody more gifted than Rory".

The Aussie pro golfer didn't tag McIlroy in the tweet, but said the 2011 U.S. Open champ must be bored playing golf without Tiger Woods in the field and lacked motivation.

Rain started falling a couple of hours after the end of the second round last night, and with thunderstorms likely on Saturday afternoon, chances are the course will not be firm and fiery.

But the long fescue rough remains a severe punishment for wildly inaccuracy, so precision off the tee will remain of paramount importance, no matter what the conditions.
