Jury still deliberating in case of officer who shot Castile

The acquittal of a Minnesota officer in the death of a licensed gun owner who volunteered that he had a gun seconds before being fatally shot during a traffic stop adds to the worries of African-American gun owners about how they are treated by police and society.

During the trial, Yanez testified that he saw Castile's gun and had ignored his orders not to pull it out.

"As people across our city, state and country react to the jury's verdict, I urge each of us to move forward in a way that is peaceful and respectful of everyone - residents, demonstrators and police officers alike". On Friday, June 16, 2017, Yanez was acquitted in the killing of Castile, a black motorist, that drew widespread attention when video of the shooting's aftermath was streamed live.

St. Paul police estimated that 2,000 people marched peacefully through the streets, including a crowd gathered outside the Minnesota state Capitol.

"As soon as you say, 'I'm a concealed carry holder". However, before Castile could complete his sentence, Yanez pulled out his gun and said: "Don't pull it out".

According to prosecutors, Yanez overreacted in the situation and Castile was not a threat to him. They spent a lot of time dissecting the "culpable negligence" requirement for conviction, and the last two holdouts eventually agreed Friday on acquittal.

The ACLU said in a statement: "Two Supreme Court decisions from the 1980s allow officers to use deadly force when a reasonable officer on the scene could reasonably fear for their safety".

Philip Stinson, a criminologist at Ohio's Bowling Green State University who tracks fatal police shootings, found that nearly 40 percent of the 82 officers nationwide charged with murder or manslaughter since 2005 were not convicted.

Authorities repeatedly asked protesters to leave before making 18 arrests shortly after midnight on Saturday, the statement said.

Questioned by his defense attorney during the trial, Yanez said: "I was scared to death".

Activists were hoping the cop would be severely punished for his actions, but a jury let him walk free on Friday (16Jun17), and Dawson, Mullally and Orange Is the New Black castmates Samira Wiley and Uzo Aduba were among those stunned by the verdict. "He made a disgusting mistake", Choi said after the verdict, referring to the officer. Minnesota Democratic Gov. Mark Dayton also weighed in, saying he did not think the shooting would have happened if Castile had been white. Prosecutors questioned whether Yanez had even seen Castile's gun, and witnesses testified that it was in a pocket of Castile's shorts when paramedics pulled him from the vehicle.

Senator Klobuchar also said she believes in the jury system and said the case has been tough on the Castile family, as well as the whole community.

Castile, a 32-year-old school cafeteria worker, was driving with his girlfriend and her 4-year-old daughter when they were pulled over by St. Anthony police Officer Jeronimo Yanez. But moments later Yanez fired seven shots while Castile was still buckled into his seat.

Yanez was charged last November with one count of felony second-degree manslaughter in Castile's death. "Yanez previously testified he had stopped Castile because the driver resembled a suspect in a local convenience store robbery days earlier", MPR reported. The last words he spoke before dying were, "I wasn't reaching for it".
