Rosenstein may need to recuse himself from Russia probe

"All Americans, regardless of party, agree on the fundamental principle that no one is above the law", Lieu, D-California, told MSNBC's Chris Hayes Friday night.

The tweets immediately prompted concerns among lawmakers that Trump might try to can both Mueller and Rosenstein.

He continued: "Americans should be skeptical about anonymous allegations".

Trump's questions are best directed at his Department of Justice, who have the power to investigate Clinton.

Comey said it should be special counsel Robert Mueller's task to determine whether Trump had obstructed justice, and therefore, had opened himself up to possible impeachment proceedings, keeping the allegations on Russian Federation in mind.

This week, Trump also attacked what he called a "phony story" in the Washington Post that said Mueller's investigation had been expanded to include an inquiry into whether Trump's firing of Comey amounted to an illegal attempt to obstruct justice.

The probe Mueller "marks a major turning point in the almost year-old FBI investigation, which until recently focused on Russian meddling during the presidential campaign and on whether there was any coordination between the Trump campaign and the Kremlin", The Washington Post reported yesterday.

The president did not immediately clarify the tweet, which likely refers to Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, but could also refer to special counsel Robert Mueller, who is overseeing the larger investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election and possible collusion between Trump's campaign and the Kremlin.

Dianne Feinstein says in a letter to Grassley Thursday that Comey should testify as part of the Judiciary panel's separate probe into Russian interference in USA elections and possible political interference at the Federal Bureau of Investigation. However, Trump later told NBC News' Lester Holt that he had already chose to fire Comey before that memo was written. Dianne Feinstein (D-CA), who said she's anxious that the President will try to fire both Mueller and Rosenstein.

On Wednesday, The Washington Post reported that Trump was under investigation for obstruction of justice, citing unnamed officials.

President Donald Trump is taking to Twitter denounce reports that the Russian Federation investigation is widening to examine whether he tried to obstruct justice.

Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's legal team, denounced the Post report, saying on Wednesday: "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal".

Mueller was named by Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein eight days after Comey's dismissal to lead the Russian Federation investigation as a special counsel, a position created to conduct investigations when a normal Justice Department probe would present a conflict of interest or in other extraordinary circumstances.

If that is the case, it could be part of what appears to be a pattern of statements that are meant to back the president.

"Creating written records immediately after one-on-one conversations with Mr. Trump was my practice from that point forward", Comey said in a written statement, which was released ahead of his open testimony before the committee. "That was his promise and that's exactly what we're doing".

"He's in for a rude awakening" if he thinks he can shut down the investigation that way, said Feinstein. "We are not aware of any instance when that has occurred", Pompeo said in a statement.
