Trump denounces reports of widening Russian Federation probe

The committee's chairman, Senator Chuck Grassley, laid out his plan in a letter made public on Wednesday in response to requests from Democrats to investigate potential obstruction of justice surrounding Comey's dismissal by President Donald Trump last month, reports Politico news.

According to the report, senators want to know if Trump acted improperly when he allegedly fired Comey to influence an investigation into Russia's hacking of the 2016 USA election.

Mark Corallo, a spokesman for Trump's personal lawyer, responded Wednesday evening to the Post report by saying: "The FBI leak of information regarding the president is outrageous, inexcusable and illegal". "It is my view that fully investigating the facts, circumstances, and rationale for Mr. Comey's removal will provide us the opportunity to do that on a cooperative, bipartisan basis".

The Post and The New York Times both reported that Mueller was seeking interviews with three Trump administration officials who weren't involved in Trump's campaign: Dan Coats, the director of national intelligence; Michael Rogers, the head of the National Security Agency; and Richard Ledgett, the former NSA deputy director. It was not known whether the Federal Bureau of Investigation was the source of the information.

The Senate intelligence committee has also interviewed Johnson in connection with its investigation of Russian activities during last year's election campaign. An aide familiar with the meeting said it was held to discuss the investigations, including ways that the parallel inquiries don't interfere with one another.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein, who appointed Mueller last month, testified Tuesday he has seen no evidence of good cause to fire Mueller.

Grassley's statement came after Sen. Dianne Feinstein, the panel's top Democrat.

Grassley said that the committee will also look at former Attorney General Loretta Lynch's handling of the investigation into Hillary Clinton's email server as part of the probe, another issue that Feinstein had said should be investigated.

"The American people deserve a full accounting of attempts to meddle in both our democratic processes and the impartial administration of justice", the chairman added.

Grassley and Feinstein met late Tuesday to discuss the Russian Federation matter following testimony from Attorney General Jeff Sessions before the Senate Intelligence Committee, Politico news reported. Grassley said that the committee should look at Lynch's actions as part of the probe into Comey's firing since the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director discussed her handling of the email probe in his testimony last week.
