Trump under investigation for obstruction of justice

The president tweeted Friday, "Despite the phony Witch Hunt going on in America, the economic & jobs numbers are great".

The Washington Post and the New York Times both reported that special counsel Robert Mueller was seeking interviews with three Trump administration officials who were not involved in Trump's campaign: US Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats; US National Security Agency (NSA) Director Michael Rogers; and former NSA deputy director Richard Ledgett.

Comey also claimed he was anxious that Trump was trying to pressure him to drop the FBI's Russian Federation investigation.

Buried in tonight's Post report is this important revelation: FBI General Counsel James A. Baker did not want now-former FBI Director Jim Comey to "assure then-President-elect Trump that the FBI was not investigating him personally".

Blunt added that he thought the Senate intelligence committee, on which he serves, is the best congressional committee to come to a conclusion on Russian interference and if the Trump campaign cooperated with Russia.

In his latest tweet, the president seemed to confirm he is under investigation for possible obstruction of justice.

On Tuesday, Attorney General Jeff Sessions declined to reveal what he and Trump have discussed about the Russian Federation probe or the decision to fire Comey.

Mueller is overseeing a host of investigations involving people who are or were in Trump's orbit, people familiar with the probe were quoted as saying.

The former speaker said Trump called him Monday night and that the two discussed Gingrich's concerns.

The second, the official continued, is if any potential offenses were committed, whether Trump or others attempted to cover them up or obstruct the investigation into them.

The Washington Post reported Thursday evening that Mueller's team is also focusing on the finances and business dealings of Jared Kushner, Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law.

Rosenstein became the Justice Department official overseeing the investigations into the Russian Federation election meddling and Trump after Attorney General Jeff Sessions recused himself from any matters arising from the 2016 presidential campaigns because he served as a prominent Trump campaign adviser. Any such step would face a steep hurdle as it would require approval by the US House of Representatives, which is controlled by Mr Trump's fellow Republicans.

U.S. President Donald Trump on June 14, 2017.

It was a memo written by Rosenstein that was originally used by the White House as justification for Comey's firing.

The morning missive appeared to refer to Rod Rosenstein, the deputy attorney general.

Trump's Twitter response followed days of intensifying criticism of Mueller from some conservatives who have charged the former Federal Bureau of Investigation director and his team with political bias and have claimed his relationship to Comey and an earlier meeting with Trump amount to conflicts of interest.

The emergence of the obstruction of justice inquiry may make it harder for Trump to have Mueller removed.

"He was appointed by (former President George W.) Bush, he's a professional and he would abhor any kind of leaks and be looking at it himself", Keating said. Naturally, he condemns it as a "witch hunt".

The president has long vehemently denied any collusion with Moscow.

However, The Washington Post report on Wednesday said that changed shortly after Mr Comey's firing.

According to the news accounts, neither Coats nor Rogers complied with Trump's requests.
