UK, EU in suspense as May tries to strike power deal

The nationalist Sinn Fein and SDLP and the cross-community Alliance have all made clear Northern Ireland Secretary James Brokenshire can not chair the ongoing process to restore power-sharing at Stormont due to the perceived conflict of interest.

The Prime Minister's comments came after predecessor Sir John Major warned that an alliance with the DUP at Westminster risked undermining the impartiality of the UK Government as attempts were made to restore the powersharing administration in Stormont.

'A fundamental part of that peace process is that the United Kingdom government needs to be impartial between all the competing interests in Northern Ireland'.

Even with a deal nearing to secure her government's survival, May is so weakened that her Brexit strategy has become the subject of public debate inside her own party, with two former prime ministers urging her to soften her approach.

"The UK government needs to be impartial between all the competing interests in Northern Ireland".

"There is very little time left".

The Stormont parties have until a June 29 deadline to reach consensus and re-establish a ruling executive.

In a TV interview, Mr Halfon added: "I genuinely believe we face potential calamity as a party because people do not understand our values, they see us just in terms of austerity".

Irish nationalist party Sinn Fein said the prospect of a British agreement with the DUP was causing anxiety and fear. To do so, she will be heavily reliant on the 10 lawmakers from the eurosceptic DUP, who can help her edge past the 326 votes needed in Parliament to avoid the collapse of the government.

Yesterday, May had faced the tough 1922 Committee of her party's backbench MPs amid a brewing rebellion within the ranks after her gamble to call a snap general election backfired, leaving the Tories eight seats short of a majority.

She said: "There's been a lot of hyperbole talked about our position to the gay community".

Talks between the Tories and the Democratic Unionist Party were continuing on Wednesday amid reports that any announcement of a deal may be delayed because of the tragic fire in a London tower block. The Conservatives are considering an arrangement in which the Northern Ireland party backs May on the budget and her confidence motions.

"It's going to be hard, there's no doubt about that, but perhaps an opportunity to consult more widely with the other parties on how best we can achieve it", he said at a conference in Poland, the Financial Times reported.

The European Parliament's Brexit negotiator, Guy Verhofstadt, also expressed his frustration.

With formal European Union divorce talks due next week, May heads to France on Tuesday to meet Emmanuel Macron, who last month swept to victory in its presidential election. That would create a "soft" border and allow companies throughout Ireland to trade with the rest of the island (and the EU) substantially as they do today.

"The door of course is still open as long as Brexit negotiations have not been concluded", he said.
