'Anxiety and fear' over Tory-DUP deal: Sinn Fein

Prime Minister David Cameron's representatives met with Peter Robinson's DUP and drafted an agreement should the Northern Ireland party hold the balance of power

Talks between UK Prime Minister Theresa May's minority Conservative government and Northern Ireland's DUP broke up for the night on Tuesday, and will resume the following day, a spokesman for May's office said.

An announcement on an agreement may not come until next week as it is thought it will be delayed as a result of the Grenfell Tower tragedy. While the DUP are deeply eurosceptic, they have balked at some of the practical implications of a so-called hard Brexit - including the potential loss of an open border with the Republic of Ireland - and the talks were likely to touch on efforts to minimise the potential damage to Northern Ireland.

Mrs Foster arrived in Downing Street with Nigel Dodds at lunchtime for negotiations with the Prime Minister but they decamped to Parliament to allow Mrs May and the DUP's deputy leader to speak in the Commons.

Theresa May has neared a deal with a Northern Irish Protestant party to save her leadership and confirmed Brexit talks would begin next week, amid calls for her to soften her approach to leaving the European Union.

Brexit minister David Davis plans to go to Brussels on Monday to start the talks, which will reshape not only Britain's role in the world, but also that of a bloc praised by many for ensuring peace after World War Two.

The Prime Minister was not present as negotiations continued on Tuesday afternoon, as she had headed to Paris for a meeting with President Emmanuel Macron.

Most importantly, with Northern Ireland having voted to remain in the European Union while the United Kingdom as a whole voted out, the DUP has won agreement that will ensure a "frictionless" border between Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

'It's going to be hard, there's no doubt about that, but perhaps an opportunity to consult more widely with the other parties on how best we can achieve it, ' Cameron was reported by the FT as saying at a conference in Poland on Tuesday.

That would help safeguard jobs and trade with European Union members but would severely restrict the UK's ability to strike its own trade deals around the world. The finance ministry declined to comment.

There's been a lot of hyperbole talked about our position to the gay community.

The government is still in talks with a small Northern Irish party to secure the support of its 10 members of parliament to pass legislation.

However, a deal with the DUP also risks destabilizing Northern Ireland by increasing the influence of pro-British unionists.

So far issues between the two parties have stopped an agreement.

The Conservatives are trying to reach an accord with the party after losing their majority - and with it, their right to govern Britain on their own - in last week's national election.

On Tuesday afternoon, Foster indicated that a deal was close to being finalised. She lost her majority and now needs to broker a deal with the DUP.
