Cosby, 79, could receive a decade or more in prison if convicted. McMonagle asked. "This is why this case got thrown in the trash can".

"Drugging somebody and putting them in a position where you can do what you want with them is not romantic".

If Cosby testifies, and denies drugging and molesting Constand or anyone else, the judge might allow more accusers to testify as rebuttal witnesses.

The defence seized on inconsistencies in the version of events Ms Constand gave when she went first went to police, and statements she made later on: She said the assault took place in March 2004, after dinner at a restaurant, then said it occurred earlier, unconnected to the restaurant outing; she said it was the first time she had been alone with Mr Cosby in his home, then said it was the third time, and that she had rebuffed his sexual advances the first two times; she said she had minimal communication with him after the incident, then acknowledged many contacts.

The jury, picked in Pittsburgh and sequestered in suburban Philadelphia, also heard Cosby's own words about the 13-year-old encounter, via 2005 police interviews and a damaging deposition he gave in Constand's civil suit against him, which was settled in 2006.

Though dozens of women have accused Cosby of sexual misconduct, only Constand's accusations led to criminal charges.

Cosby arrived at court arm-in-arm with his wife Camille on Monday, marking her first appearance at the comedian's trial for aggravated indecent assault.

She woke up on the couch with her clothes disheveled, she said. McMonagle, looking to raise doubts about her motives, reminded jurors that she contacted a lawyer who specializes in sexual assault lawsuits around the time she reported the alleged assault to police.

"Stop this!" he pleaded repeatedly with jurors. McMonagle called the detective merely to attest to the existence of a police report about Constand's interviews with law enforcement investigators and to briefly discuss questions the policeman asked the alleged victim about several hours she spent with Cosby at a CT casino. He urged the jury to reject the idea that Constand's sexual encounter with Cosby had been consensual.

Cosby said before the trial that he did not plan to testify because of what could happen on cross-examination.

Cosby's wife of 53 years, Camille was in the courtroom for the first time in the trial.

The lawyer grew especially excited when he displayed a statement from Constand that the night of the alleged assault, she called Cosby from the street to tell him she was at his home and ask to be let into the driveway. Constand testified last week that she made the calls because of her job at Temple, where Cosby was a trustee and a famous alumnus, and Steele noted the calls stopped as soon as she left the school.

"When you dance outside of marriage you gotta pay the band", McMonagle said.

The comedian stands accused of three counts of aggravated indecent assault for allegedly sexually assaulting Constand in his Cheltenham mansion in January 2004.

"We're here because of them", he said, pointing to the benches of reporters covering the trial. The jury went home around 9:30 p.m. ET Monday without reaching a verdict. The allegation by the now 44-year-old former staffer at Cosby's alma mater, Temple University, is the only one not too old to be the subject of criminal prosecution.

"This isn't talking to a trustee, this is talking to a lover", he said. He says Constand was stressed so he told her, "I have three friends for you to make you relax". The defence says when the case began it was about money, but now it's a about a man's liberty.

She sat in the front row, across the aisle from Constand, who didn't react to McMonagle's two-hour closing but smiled at the end of it.

Prosecutors will give their closing argument Monday afternoon. She says they left her semi-conscious.

She sued Cosby after prosecutors in 2005 declined to press charges.

He added: "All the fancy lawyering you have can't get you around your own words".

Unsealed in 2015, the testimony contains statements from Cosby admitting to giving quaaludes - a sleep aid that became a popular party drug - to women in the 1970s when he wanted to have sex with them.

Steele attempted to focus attention back on the trial's central accuser, Andrea Constand, calling her a victim who showed great courage and withstood hours of questioning on the witness stand.

Prosecutors suggest Cosby gave her something stronger.
