Brexit talks: Hammond says jobs and economy the priority

UK's Hammond says economy should be priority in Brexit talks

Technical talks between European Union and British officials on how the negotiations should be conducted already began last week.

Following tomorrow's meeting, talks will continue on a monthly basis throughout the summer.

A second phase of talks on future trade relations will follow only after they are satisfied that sufficient progress has been made on these issues.

With the clock already ticking on the UK's two-year departure from the bloc, Brexit Secretary David Davis will meet the European Commission's chief negotiator Michel Barnier to hold their first formal Brexit talks on Monday.

The Commission said: "The opening of negotiations at political level next week will focus on issues related to citizens' rights, the financial settlement, the Northern Irish border and other separation issues, as part of the sequenced approach to the talks". Both sides need an agreement to keep trade flowing between the world's biggest trading bloc and the fifth largest global economy.

Indeed, a soft Brexit is advisable because it is widely argued that a complete exit from the European Union would be very harmful for the UK's services-dominated economy.

"Our view is that withdrawal agreement and terms of the future relationship must be agreed alongside each other", said the spokesman.

"The fact they are coming and that they agree to talk about the subjects that we set out, shows that the clash is under control", a senior European official told AFP on condition of anonymity.

The article states that discussions on a member's withdrawal must "take account of the framework for its future relationship with the Union". "The withdrawal and future are intimately linked".

"That has always been our first aim and that is what we will do", the spokesman said. "But it's odd that British chief negotiator David Davis only wants to grant these rights to those who entered before March 29".

Arriving at a meeting of European Union finance ministers in Luxembourg on Thursday, Mr Hammond signalled his ongoing loyalty to the Remainer causes, telling his colleagues: "My clear view, and I believe the view of the majority of people in Britain, is we should prioritise protecting jobs, protecting economic growth and protecting prosperity".

"There is no Brexit bill".

Underlining the difficulty of the task confronting May, The Sunday Telegraph reported the prime minister will face an immediate leadership challenge from eurosceptic lawmakers in her party if she seeks to water down her plans for Brexit.

His European counterparts are likely to welcome such a deal being put forward, as EU member states run a surplus trade on goods entering the United Kingdom, which would be uninterrupted under his plans.

Meanwhile a separate row erupted with Brussels, after the Brexit department strenuously denied reports it will settle a multi-billion pound "divorce bill" before starting talks on future trade deal with the EU.

Still, while the prospect of Britain reversing its decision is still remote, a rethink is now more likely than it was before June 8's snap election.

However, it is unclear how much support Mr Hammond's plans have within the British negotiating team.

Sir Keir said the government should now drop their claim that "no deal is better than a bad deal" on Brexit, saying it had "never been a viable option".
