Eddie Jones praises England effort as tourists tie up Test series success

Rugby: England beat Argentina 35-25 to win series

Eddie Jones' men overcame the odds in following up their opening 38-34 victory in San Juan with an even more impressive 35-25 success in Santa Fe and, here, we look at the major talking points of the series.

England took a narrow 18-13 lead into half-time following maiden worldwide tries from lock Charlie Ewels and centre Piers Francis in addition to eight points from the boot of George Ford, while Argentina scored through Joaquin Tuculet's touch down and two penalties from Nicholas Sanchez. Some will inevitably join the one-cap club when the Lions players return for the autumn internationals but players like Sam Curry, Charlie Ewels, Sam Underhill and Piers Francis laid down a marker for the future.

England head coach Eddie Jones hailed his side's achievement in grinding out a 2-0 series win in Argentina despite not being fully satisfied with their overall display.

Eddie Jones, the England head coach, might be a brilliant rugby coach but he should probably give up trying to predict the future after England got home in another insane match in Argentina.

With plenty of English involvement in the British & Irish Lions tour it was an inexperienced squad that Jones took to Argentina for the two Test series.

"It's now a chance to move forward".

"In the back-line, Piers Francis and Alex Lozowski are worth looking at, also Denny Solomona".

Ford's fourth goal opened up a seven-point gap but it vanished just as quickly as Argentina winger Emiliano Boffelli went through a gaping hole on the England right to score his second try in as many matches, Sanchez converting to lock it up at 25-25.

"I would estimate about 80 percent of the squad for the World Cup in Japan will come from the 45 players who form the next elite group". They will be better for that - they were playing against very experienced players.

"That is the next big thing I need to do".

"We wanted to win 2-0 and then to have a number of young players come through really well is great for us".

Yet a driven line-out, finished by replacement Collier, edged England ahead for the fifth and last time in the match, before Ford's drop goal. "The motive for me was to win (on Saturday) and make sure I leave this team in a good place".

"It wasn't pretty, there were a lot of errors and we certainly didn't get going with our game but we found a way to win".

Yet experience won the day too with Ford and Care both excellent at controlling affairs behind the scrum and fullback Mike Brown producing two pieces of counter-attacking brilliance to set up the tries for Francis and Care.

"Argentina are a brilliant team and you have to be at your best to win or somewhere near your best so we are very happy".
