Griner has 27, Mercury top Sky 86-78; Taurasi nears record

Brittney Griner scored 27 points and Diana Taurasi had 15 to move closer to the WNBA scoring record after the Phoenix Mercury beat the Chicago Sky 86-78 on Friday night. By reaching 7,489 points for her career, she passes Tina Thompson for first on the all-time scoring list. Sugar Rodgers contributed 19 points, including two free throws with 2:53 left in overtime that put NY up for good 92-91, their first lead since the first quarter.

She first entered the league when she was selected with the No. 1 overall pick in the 2004 WNBA Draft by the Phoenix Mercury out of the University of CT, where she was a three-time National Champion.

Coming into play on Sunday, Taurasi was averaging 18.2 points per game. She has won four Olympic gold medals, two world titles, three WNBA championships and three NCAA championships in her career.

Despite her domination in the league, she has chosen to continue playing in Russian Federation when her scheduled allowed, even deciding to not play during the 2015 WNBA year.

With just under a minute remaining in the game, Chicago's Jessica Breland hit a 3-pointer to pull the Sky to within 80-75.
