London Police Raise Death Toll In Tower Fire To 30

Meanwhile, Metropolitan Police commander Stuart Cundy responded to speculation that the number of dead could exceed 100, saying: "From a personal perspective, I really hope it isn't".

More than 3 million pounds ($3.8 million) has been raised for victims of the London high-rise fire that has killed at least 30 people and left dozens homeless.

He said: "If there had been a sprinkler system in this building there wouldn't have been a fire when the fire brigade got there because it would have been contained in the room [where] it started".

"This is an absolutely terrible fire that took place".

A fire department spokesman said crews are working to secure the debris so that two subway lines could be reopened as soon as possible.

He says it will take weeks or longer to recover and identify all the dead in the public housing block that was devastated by a fire early Wednesday. The police said the number would continue to rise, and also announced that they were opening a criminal investigation.

Cundy said there was "a risk that sadly we may not be able to identify everybody". Corbyn says that he is very angry at what happened, which he links to what is known as fiscal austerity-that is, when government spends only 108 percent of tax revenue, instead of the much higher percentage that he favors.

"I called him and said: "Where are you?', I said: 'Where are you?' He said: 'I'm in the flat.' I said: 'Why you didn't come?"

British Prime Minister Theresa May, facing criticism for the government's handling of the disaster, met Saturday with 15 fire survivors invited to her official residence at 10 Downing Street.

After her initial failure to engage with the public, the Prime Minister sought to make amends when she went to St Clement's Church, near the blaze, to meet locals and community leaders.

Residents and victims have expressed outrage at Prime Minister Theresa May, who visited the site the day before without meeting with local residents. "What are you going to do about it?" a young boy asked as Mr Khan tried to stop tensions rising further.

"The bad news, I'm afraid, is lots of people died in the fire". There are a lot of courageous firefighters and police and ambulance workers.

Among the questions being asked are whether the owner of the building took any shortcuts in its use of construction materials, including the installation of external cladding, part of a renovation completed previous year, that may have accelerated the fire's spread: It took only 15 minutes to take hold across the tower block.

Residents demanded that Cundy explain why more information had not been released on the numbers missing and why more identities had not been confirmed.

Hands and Treasury chief Philip Hammond said in separate TV appearances that the cladding used on Grenfell seems to be prohibited by British regulations.

Ms Alia Al-Ghabbani, a receptionist who lives in the estate, was among many angered by a recent refurbishment in which new cladding was added to the exterior of the building and which media reports said might have played a part in the rapid spread of the fire. Yesterday, the first victim of the fire was named as 23- year-old Syrian refugee Mohammed Alhajali.
