Macron's party dominates French parliamentary vote

France En Marche! Political movement formed arounf President Emmanuel Macron is leading in the overwhelming majority of constituencies at Sunday's elections to the National Assembly lower parliament house, BFMTV said citing preliminary results of the voting. The populist Le Pen, running for a parliamentary seat to represent her northern bastion around Henin-Beaumont, appears likely to win after scoring 46 percent of the vote in the first round.

Polling agency projections suggested Macron's Republic on the Move!

"Tonight, the collapse of the Socialist Party is beyond doubt", Jean-Christophe Cambadelis said after announcing he would step down as head of the Socialist Party.

With 57% of votes counted, the Interior Ministry said that Mr Macron's party had won 4% of the vote, followed by the conservative Republicans with 23%. The Front National, though recently so close to the country's highest office, held 10%, still defeating the socialists ambysmal 6%.

Le Pen's right wing Front National party garnered 13.2% of the vote last Sunday and is expected to take between one and four seats. German officials were also reportedly celebrating Macron's march to victory, with Chancellor Angela Merkel's chief of staff tweeting that the result was "Good for Europe and for Germany!".

However a low turnout could damage this mandate, after a 49 per cent turnout during the first round of voting.

Commenting on the low turnout, Le Pen said it could undermine the legitimacy of the newly elected parliament.

Rivals of President Emmanuel Macron's dominant new party are urging more voters to cast ballots this time in hopes of preventing him from having a crushing majority.

"Go and vote!" Prime Minister Edouard Philippe urged on Thursday, calling it both "a right and a responsibility".

With its allies from MoDem centrist party, it is represented by 360 lawmakers, sparing the need to rely on other movements to pass legislation on labour codes, cut public expenditure by billions of euros, raise taxes on consumption and wealthy pensioners and invest more in training and innovative sectors.

The conservative Republicans and its allies are set to form the largest opposition block with 97 to 133 seats.

Less than half of the 47.5 million-strong electorate turned out last Sunday, a record low that especially punished Marine Le Pen's far-right National Front party.
