Meet The DOJ Official Who Could Take Over The Trump Investigation

The development comes a day after the daily reported that Mueller had extended his probe into determining whether the President tried to obstruct justice by suggesting to top intelligence and law enforcement officials that they end the Russian Federation investigation.

Others have pointed to news that Mueller interviewed with Trump for the Federal Bureau of Investigation director post after Comey's firing.

Trump fired Comey on May 9, citing recommendations made to him by Rosenstein.

Malcolm, who worked for Trump's FBI director pick, Chris Wray, when Wray was head of the DOJ's criminal division, spoke after a Washington Post report said Mueller's investigation has now widened to determine whether Trump attempted to obstruct justice. The Post has also reported that Mueller is investigating the business dealings of Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser Jared Kushner. Mr. Kushner previously volunteered to share with Congress what he knows about Russia-related matters.

Mueller's office has informed a range of officials they 'have a duty to preserve any physical and electronic records that may be related in any way to the subject matter of the pending investigations, ' the New York Times reported, quoting from a memo from the transition team counsel's office. Mueller was appointed under a rarely used regulation that gives him a broad mandate to investigate just about anything he feels is necessary, which could ultimately include Rosenstein's role in Comey's firing.

The "cloud" that Trump has been complaining about for months got bigger and darker this week. Cohen has received a subpoena from one of the congressional committees looking into the Russian Federation issue.

If Rosenstein were to recuse himself, Brand - who other than Rosenstein and Attorney General Jeff Session is the only other Senate-confirmed official in the entire agency at the moment - would take over his responsibilities.

Reports that Trump allegedly asked two intelligence chiefs to publicly deny any cooperation between his campaign and Russian Federation are also said to be part of the investigation. Diana Feinstein, D-San Francisco, to respond with her own tweets saying Trump appears to think he's above the law.

Trump's surrogates have launched a broad campaign to discredit Mueller, claiming conflicts of interest and that he has been bringing on prosecutors who have supported Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton.

If Rosenstein goes, who replaces him? He said the president "sought my advice and input" on Comey's firing.

Moscow has denied any interference.

They have tried to highlight the positive reviews he received on Wednesday when he made a statesman-like appearance in the White House to address the nation after House of Representatives Republican whip Steve Scalise was shot during a congressional baseball practice.

"After 7 months of investigations & committee hearings about my "collusion with the Russians", nobody has been able to show any proof".
