North Korea has claimed that the United States recently mugged its delegation carrying a diplomatic package in NY, calling on Washington to provide an explanation on what it calls a provocation.

North Korea accused U.S. authorities on Sunday of "mugging" its diplomats at the John F Kennedy airport in NY, forcibly confiscating a diplomatic package which it said raised questions about the city as the seat of the United Nations.

A spokesman for the hermit kingdom's Ministry of Foreign Affairs accused the U.S. of forcibly seizing a "diplomatic package in "an illegal and heinous act of provocation". "The U.S. should reflect on its reckless act and be fully aware of the grave consequences to follow". While U.S. officials have not revealed what the package contained, the North Koreans claim that they had a valid diplomatic courier certificate for carrying the package.

"The global community needs to seriously reconsider whether or not NY, where such an outrageous mugging is rampant, is fit to serve as the venue for worldwide meetings", KCNA said. The report adds that the package was confiscated by a group of agents from the United States Department of Homeland Security when the North Korean diplomats were making their way onto an aircraft bound for Pyongyang, the capital city of the country.

Neither the State Department nor White House have yet commented on North Korea's allegations, Reuters noted.

North Korea says it will not give up on its nuclear deterrence unless Washington ends its hostile policy toward Pyongyang and dissolves the US-led United Nations command in South Korea.

Last week, North Korea returned U.S. university student Otto Warmbier to his family, more than a year after he had been sentenced to 15 years hard labour.

Warmbier - who was sentenced to 15 years at hard labor for allegedly stealing a political poster from a restricted floor of a North Korean hotel - was sent home to OH with severe brain damage, which North Korea blamed on his contracting botulism and taking a sleeping pill following his trial in March 2016.

North Korea did not detail the contents of the package. Warmbier was arrested back in January 2016 after he overstayed in North Korea - being there on a tourist visa.
